The Association of Fine Artists of Serbia (ULUS) Expanded Media Section
announces open call for the exhibition
ATLAS of Particles-Are you … (predictable)?
that will take place from 02nd July 2020 until 25th July 2020
in Pavilion CVIJETA ZUZORIĆ Mali Kalemegdan 1, 11000 Belgrade
ULUS, as a professional association of artists active in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, accomplishes its mission in promoting and protecting the working and professional rights and interests of visual artists; securing their better social standing and accordingly securing a better position for visual art in society; raising the quality of artistic production and organizing a referent and representative art program. For the first time, the expanded media branch of this association is organizing an annual exhibition – which, in addition to the Triennial Festival, aims to provide insight into the production of membership in the expanded media format, ie. time-based arts.
The first edition of the exhibition will be held with the subtitle “ATLAS of Particles – Are you… (predictable)?”, containing both scientific and artistic, but also wider social connotations.
According to quantum physics, particles are the smallest, sometimes hypothetical, quantities of a substance, characterized by a variety of magnetic and wave motions, as well as different types of structures and effects. The term and definition of “particles” can be the initial impulse for artistic research – based both on scientific and poetic principles. Also, particles as new, quantum parameters of understanding space and time can serve as a basis for re-thinking about what defines us in material and digital space.
Predictability often implies generally accepted social, political, esthetic criteria, prejudices or expectations.
We invite artists to submit works dealing with:
– interactions of visible or invisible forces and technologies of the digital age,
– the relationship of the individual and the superstructures,
– the relationship of media and technology to individual existence,
– the supremacy of technology over nature,
– language, coded communication,
– different parameters that affect human perception,
– contemporary critical thinking of environmental problems (all kinds of pollution).
The competition is open to all works that are in the domain of expanded media, such as video, experimental film, audio installations, performances, various forms of multimedia and intermediate (ambient art, happenings, concept art, land art, body art, digital photography, street art, mail art and more), interactive installations (works realized through computers, microphones, electronic sensors, networking), the art of software and applications, etc.
It is also possible to propose accompanying programs, presentations within time frame of the exhibition. In this case, basic information, a description of the proposed program, documentation on the topic and idea of the program should be provided, together with a proposal for a date of presentation.
The competition is open to all artists, and each author or art group has the right to apply with two works for the exhibition created no later than 2018.
The application (one for each work) should include:
- completed application form (attached),
- visual presentation of the work – insert from the proposed work in .mp4, .jpg, .wav format or a link to the visual and textual documentation of the work. At least one 10x15cm photo, 300 dpi resolution, RGB color mode is required for each submitted work. In the case of video or process work, a preview link (Vimeo, Youtube…) should be provided in the form of an insert not longer than 3 minutes.
